When you think of Natchez, chances are the first thought is that of witnessing the flowing of the mighty Mississippi River from the bluffs above. Maybe it’s about the history that simply oozes from every fiber of the city. Perhaps it’s the antebellum homes and giant oak trees. Whatever brings you to Natchez, know they have food to excite anyone.

I recently visited this beautiful city for the first time. I can honestly say it was everything I had imagined and more. The food was incredible, and I’d like you to accompany me on the memories of these great establishments. I’ll stand by my recommendations for all the eateries. The Little Easy

If you’re looking for a beautiful place to eat that offers a casual and comfortable atmosphere, look no further. It is the place all the locals go to get their coffee. There are no national coffee houses or fast-food chains in the downtown district that you see in other cities. These can be found on the outskirts of town.
The Little Easy is not only where the locals go, but where the out-of-towners go as well. While small in building stature, the food and atmosphere of The Little Easy deserve much acclaim. Most people flock to the outdoor seating areas. Those walking, jogging, or bike riding will stop in, grab their coffee or tea and a bit of conversation, and then continue with their day. This is one busy little restaurant.
They serve from 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. most days of the week, but I enjoyed their breakfast fare. Their Boozy Brunch offerings range from the standard breakfast eggs and choice of protein to Smoked Salmon & White Cheddar Grits Croquette. I stayed traditional with “The Easy” Breakfast. However you like them best (scrambled, fried, or other), the eggs are served with applewood smoked bacon, toast, and potatoes. An added touch to the dish is using fresh, edible flowers as a garnish. I complemented this with an iced caramel latte and couldn’t have been happier. Both the food and service were exceptional.
The Little Easy prides itself on being eco-friendly. From their to-go containers to their merchandise, such as T-Shirts, they source items made from recyclable and bio-degradable materials.
Pro Tip: As you are enjoying your meal in the outdoor seating, be sure to ask your server to make sure she places a Treva fan on the table. This is a small battery-powered restaurant fan that ensures insects are deterred from trying to enjoy your breakfast. It worked so well, I bought two for my personal use.
Natchez Brewing Company

Close to The Little Easy lies another gem in the historic downtown area of Natchez – Natchez Brewing Company. Here you will find local brews crafted by folks with an abiding passion for Natchez history and flavor and some of the best pizza in the city.
I admit I was skeptical of their “Best Pizza” affirmation. Pizza is taken very seriously in the northeast, where I was born and raised. The meal I devoured here was well worthy of the claim! It is evident as you taste the product that the dough is made fresh and hand-tossed. No premade shells could ever produce such a foundation for quality sauce and toppings.
Thin crust pizza is my favorite, but if it’s not yours, no problem. You can order Detroit-style or Deep-Dish pan pizza. Varieties range from Quattro Formaggi (a blend of four kinds of cheese) to many with more gusto such as the Chicken Pesto, The Butcher (pepperoni, seasoned beef, bacon, and pulled pork) or several more in between. You can also order from their assortment of small bites, salads, or calzones, along with drinks and dessert.

My choice for the day was the Motor City Supreme. This pizza was a flavorful combination of house cheese blend, pepperoni, Italian sausage, green pepper, red onion, mushrooms, Romano, Italian tomato sauce, and fresh oregano. It was a colorful array of scrumptiousness, and the entire pizza was quickly devoured.
Let’s not leave out the main attraction – the craft beer and the atmosphere. You sit inside (or outside – your choice) among the fermentation tanks housing their multitudes of hand-crafted beer. Everything is fabulously casual, where you sit at a picnic table in a jazzy, relaxed atmosphere. Great music is piped into the room, and many times you catch live music.
Every brew tank is meticulously controlled, with clipboards hanging from each where the master brewers monitor the process daily. When asked, I was told that the actual beer only takes a day to mix and brew. The fermentation process takes the longest – 1-1/2 weeks or longer – depending on the recipe.
Another interesting fact about Natchez Brewing is their beer is only available on-site. It is not sold anywhere else. When you visit and find a favorite, you can purchase a growler or two to take home. They will fill and seal it, and away you go!
Pro Tip: If you need an extra kick on your food, add some chili oil. There is a bottle housed at each table.
The Camp Restaurant

Looking for a laid-back meal with a phenomenal view? The Camp has just what you’re looking for! Located in the “Under the Hill” district of the city, it sits on the banks of the incredible Mississippi River. With a storied history from the 19th century of being the “rowdiest docks on the Mississippi River,” the area is home to several restaurants and bars, each with a fabulous view – especially at sunset.
The Camp is a two-storied brick building, with hardwood floors and several smaller rooms. It exudes a down-to-earth atmosphere that utilizes chalkboards for the menu items available. It is a friendly place, frequented by locals and tourists alike. They play great music, have several TVs scattered about walls, and a bar where local and national sports take center stage. It is bustling, with people of all ages and backgrounds coming together to enjoy great food and pleasant surroundings, with the stunning view of the river.
The diverse menu consists of appetizers, salads, tacos, quesadillas, burgers, sandwiches, and melts, along with catfish or shrimp plates and dessert. There is something for anyone in your party, whether eating light or having a hearty appetite. The choices of the day for my party were to start with Philly Cheese Tot-chos. These were a delicious combination of tater tots covered with queso, onions and peppers, grilled steak strips, and cheddar.
I then moved on to The Hen-rietta. This was panko breaded and fried chicken breast, with Swiss cheese, lettuce, and tomato on homemade buns, topped with Creole honey mustard. This is also served with the house hand-cut fries, which I can attest were simply to die for.
For dessert, they offer Bread Pud’n (in true southern style) and an authentic A&W Root Beer Float, just to name a couple.
Pro Tip: You’ll notice the catsup served tastes a bit different than you would expect. I asked my server Aleena why, thinking there was something amiss. I found out they liven up ordinary catsup by smoking it and adding a touch of jalapeno. If you’re sensitive to spice, use sparingly.
Rolling River Reloaded

When I approached this quaint restaurant on Main Street, I expected a traditional lunch spot patronized by professionals and business folks. What was discovered was this divine restaurant that served some of the best southern classic foods, and true to their word, I left having enjoyed a “Soulful Southern Experience.”
Walking into the restaurant, you see a shotgun-type layout. On the right, there is what can only be referred to as a diner counter. Booth and round table seating are on the other side of the aisle, with the kitchen in the back. There is a small but classy wine section near the diner counter. You find a mixture of professionals in their suits, locals coming in to have a quick lunch, and tourists taking it all in. They have a thriving take-out business as well. Once you sit down to order, you notice a second room – one set up for private events.
Henson was my server and was one of the most personable and engaging people I’ve ever met. He was knowledgeable about all the food served and even convinced me to try something new – a dish I never thought would be appealing. He persuaded me to get a small sample of greens, served with onions and bacon pieces, along with an array of heavenly spices. The small plate was nearly licked clean!
I had a Philly Cheesesteak Po’Boy and an order of Big Mama’s Battered Fried Wings as a main dish. I can affirm that everything I inhaled that day was as delicious as it sounds. While it might not have been the healthiest choice, my meal was one of the most delightful I had during my visit.
Rolling River Reloaded is the epitome of a local, well-run establishment in the heart of the business district that serves classic, fabulous food.
The Castle Restaurant

Dunleith Historic Inn is one of the many National Historic Landmarks in Natchez. It is a pre-Civil War mansion, sitting behind a wrought iron gate and massive Greek columns. In the original carriage house and stables, recently renovated, you will find The Castle Restaurant and Pub. As the building was built to resemble a castle, it’s the closest many people (myself included) may get to dining inside a castle.
When you walk through the vast carriage house doors, you feel you are stepping back in time. You are enveloped in the dark wood, both floors and walls mingled with clever lighting to make the restaurant exceedingly welcoming. The bar is long and well-stocked, and the seating is arranged in a relaxed and comfortable manner. The brick fireplace adds a touch of prior centuries, as does the antique rocking chair sitting to the side.
Our server Sydney works there when she’s not in college pursuing her degree. I also had the chance to speak with the F&B Manager, Doug, and Ricky, the Bar Manager. All shared their love of the Castle and their vision to make it an enormous success.
If the food served is any indication, they are on target. A small plate of Gouda Cheese Fries was ordered to start the meal. As you would expect, these are hand-cut fries topped with melted Gouda cheese, Momay, and Truffle Oil. From there,
I moved on to the Steak Au Frite. This dish of seared chuck tender, with truffle fries and Sauce Au Poivre, melted in my mouth. The flavors were rich and complimented each other superbly.
My companion chose the Roasted Chicken Piccata. The fusion of capers, preserved lemon bay, fresh herbs, grape tomatoes, and finished with caramelized onion made the dish taste unique.
As marvelous as the main course was, I have to say the piece de resistance was in the form of dessert. The Brandy Roasted Pear with Lemon Mascarpone was a culinary delight. While I have had each ingredient many times, when all are put together in this magical dessert, the flavors just explode and leave you wanting more.
As you leave The Castle, you stroll by their fresh herb garden, containing oregano, parsley, basil, rosemary, mint, and many others as well. These herbs are put to clever use in the kitchen and make the meals spectacular. Between the meal and the ambiance of The Castle, I can assure you I will be making a return visit.
Pro Tip: I would highly recommend staying in one of the numerous Bed and Breakfasts available in Natchez. Most of these accommodations have given new life to historic buildings in the area, and the chefs pride themselves on offering the guests hearty breakfasts with their own personal flair.
Natchez has many restaurants, cafes, coffeehouses, and downhome pubs and diners, offering a wide variety of choices to locals and visitors alike. Whatever you are in the mood for, you’ll find it all served with authentic Southern charm and hospitality. Make time to visit and explore.
