Yorkshire terriers are toy dogs that don’t really need plenty of foods. They have very little stomach that cannot handle too much food absorption. They generally weigh around 3 to 8 lbs and if they eat too much, they can get sick.

A small and not very active Yorkie only needs about 150 calories per day. But if she’s more active and a bit bigger, then she needs about 200 calories every day.

When it comes to feeding your Yorkie, you can either feed her with a commercial dog food or just an ordinary home food meal. But here’s what you have to know first:

    Commercial Dog Foods:

    1. Most manufactured foods have substances that are actually not useful to the general health of your Yorkie. For example, most dog food products have artificial food coloring or artificial food flavors and some other chemical preservatives. Those ingredients can be a source of some dog issues such as digestive problems and allergies.
    1. Most commercial dog foods have by-product ingredients. These by-products can provide more proteins to dog foods. However, these by-products came from what’s left of a butchered animal after the portions that are meant for human intake have been taken out. By-products came from animal’s feet, liver, lungs, intestines, undeveloped eggs, spleen, frames, and etc.

Watch out for generic by-product meals because it does not classify the source of the meat. Manufacturers just use indistinct names like Animal by-product meal or Meat meal or Meat and bone meal and etc.

These generic by-products came from road kill, dead zoo animals, or unhealthy and dying animals.

Choose the named by-product meals instead. These named by-product dog foods classifies the source of the meat, for example, Chicken by-product meal, Turkey by-product meal, Poultry by-product meal and etc.

    1. Most dog foods have fillers. Fillers are useless ingredients that fluff up the foods to make it look delightful but doesn’t actually contain any nutritional value. Foods like these will just go to waste and may cause starvation, thus making your dog develop some behavioral issues like eating feces.

If you do not like commercial foods, you can feed your Yorkie with natural dog foods that you can buy in the market.

You can feed your Yorkshire terrier with high quality dog food products from Whole Earth Farms. Their products contain natural ingredients that provides full and balanced nourishment for your pooch.

You can also purchase dog food products from Orijen. They provide high quality fresh meat ingredients like fresh uncaged red meats, free-run chickens and turkeys, and etc.

    Home Cooking:

With homemade foods, you will feel safer since the food you’re providing your Yorkie does not have any chemicals, fillers, and by-products.

Choose from any of these suggested foods in feeding your Yorkie.

    Fish, chicken, lamb, turkey

    • Fruits

    Banana, mango, blueberry, raspberry

    • Vegetables

    Spinach, carrots, peas, string beans

    • Dessert

    • Treats

Avoid snacks with intense color (high in chemical mixtures) – choose light or white or cream colored snacks instead. Give him fresh carrots for his treats or some frozen fruits like frozen blueberry.
