Whether you prefer them soft or hard boiled, you can easily and quickly make delicious eggs using this method. It’s especially convenient if you have limited space, such as a microfridge. In just a matter of seconds, you can enjoy a tasty and nutritious meal.
Is It Safe to Boil Eggs in the Microwave?
There’s a lot of conflicting advice out there when it comes to boiling eggs in the microwave. Some suggest poking a hole in the bottom of each egg to prevent explosions, while others recommend adding salt to the water. In my experience, I haven’t had any issues with exploding eggs, and I’ve never poked holes in them. However, it is crucial to either add salt or poke holes to avoid any potential explosions. Cleaning egg and shell splatters from your microwave is not a fun task.
How to Boil Eggs in the Microwave
To boil eggs in the microwave, all you need is a microwave-safe bowl and some hot water. Place the eggs in the bowl, ensuring they are fully submerged in water that’s about half an inch above them. Don’t forget to add half a teaspoon of salt per egg to prevent explosions.
Achieving the Desired Consistency
The cooking time will depend on how you prefer your eggs. Here are the recommended times:
- Soft boiled eggs with runny yolks: Remove the eggs from the hot water as soon as they come out of the microwave and immediately place them in a bowl filled with ice water.
- Medium boiled eggs: After microwaving the eggs, let them sit in the water for five minutes before transferring them to a bowl of ice water.
- Hard boiled eggs with firm yolks: Allow the eggs to sit in the hot water for 6-8 minutes.
Storing Boiled Eggs
If you plan to eat the boiled eggs right away, peel them after they’ve soaked in cold water for 2-3 minutes. For later use, dry the eggs and keep them unpeeled. Place them in a zipper baggie along with a paper towel, then seal it up. Alternatively, if you still have the paper egg carton, simply put the eggs back into it and mark the carton with the date.

Once you have your boiled eggs ready, there are numerous dishes you can create, such as tuna salad, deviled eggs, egg salad sandwiches, and tuna melt surprises. These make for quick and flavorful lunches or dinners.
