Frequently Asked Questions About Make Ahead Smoothies

Can Smoothies Be Made The Night Before?

While you can make your smoothie in advance, you may not want to actually blend the smoothie until you’re ready to drink it. By leaving your freezer pack of smoothie contents in the freezer until you’re ready to use them, you are allowing them to also act as the ice in the recipe.

When you have them blended or thawed in the fridge you may feel the need to add in ice to the smoothie recipe which makes them less nutritious and watered down.

How far in advance can you make a smoothie?

You can make the freezer bags weeks in advance but you definitely do not want to make your blended smoothie until you’re ready to drink it.

Can you freeze smoothies in ziplock bags?

You can freeze the fruits and vegetables that you want inside of your smoothie inside of a ziplock bag but you don’t want to actually blend the entire smoothie and then store it this way.

If you have smoothie leftover, create little popsicles! I use these disposable popsicle mold baggies and they make a delicious sweet treat!

Can I freeze my own fruit for smoothies?

You can freeze any fruits you want. While some people choose to freeze already mixed bags of fruits and berries from the supermarket you can use fresh fruits and berries too. Just make sure that you washed and chopped them well before freezing so that it is easier for your blender to mix everything together.

Can you freeze baby spinach?

Yes! Absolutely! Frozen spinach is a great addition to green smoothies because they add in a lot of added nutrients. Feel free to add washed (and dried) leaves of green baby spinach to your freezer meal prepped smoothies. You can also use already frozen spinach from the grocery store to reduce time and effort on your part.

Can I just blend frozen fruit?

If you care for your smoothie and your blender, I do not recommend just blending frozen fruits. The frozen fruit will be hard as rocks and without anything else added to the container, your blades can get hurt trying to pulverize your frozen fruits.

When you make a smoothie in the blender, you want to make sure that you do it in the right order, where the liquids and soft ingredients like yogurt are at the bottom.

This makes it much easier for the blades to work their way around the frozen fruits and allows everything to become liquified without so much stress on your appliance.

What are some things that you do not want to add to a smoothie?

As amazing as smoothies can be, and with as many available options as there is to make a perfect frozen drink, there are still some healthy things that you do NOT want to add into your smoothie!

Celery, fennel, snap peas and string beans are just a few ingredients that you never want to throw into your smoothie. The stringy veggies may be healthy to eat, but they maintain that stringiness in the smoothies making them unenjoyable and creating an unsatisfying texture that you won’t want to drink.

So if you want to include these greens in your diet, do it the old fashioned way and cook them or eat them raw.

Does blending destroy nutrients?

Blending your fruits and vegetables does make the fiber a little less effective on your body than eating them whole because the drink has been blended so much that your body can absorb and pass through it faster, but it still gives you a great nutritional boost.

By making a smoothie you’re more likely to add in even more fiber and vitamins than you would normally eat in a single sitting, so even if there was a minor loss of nutrition, it wouldn’t account for much.

Blending doesn’t take away any more nutrition than chopping, chewing, peeling or juicing would and is better at keeping the nutritional values than cooking methods.

What are the healthiest things to put in a smoothie?

The healthiest things to keep in a smoothie are dark and leafy greens like spinach or kale as well as whole fruits and berries. Adding in juice, yogurt, nuts or nut butters are also great ways of increasing the healthiness of your smoothies.
