So, you love to eat steak all year round, but the weather isn’t so good in the winter and you can’t go outside to grill. You cannot go on a boat grilling. What you need is an indoor grill, but which one to choose? Why not try out the George Foreman grill. You can cook steak on one of these and you should get great results.

What is a George Forman Grill?

A George Forman grill is a portable electric grill. Surprisingly, it wasn’t invented by George Foreman, but by Michael Boehm and Robert Johnson in 1994. George Foreman, the champion boxer, promoted it and it has become such a success that well over 100 million of these grills have been sold worldwide.

Michael Boehm and Robert Johnson wanted to create a grill that would cook on both sides so you don’t have to flip over the steak or burgers or whatever else you are cooking as you would with a normal grill. They also wanted to produce a grill that cooked healthy food that wasn’t swimming in fat. With this in mind, they added a drip tray.

The George Foreman grill is in the shape of a clamshell and has grill plates on the top and the bottom. They heat up at the same time so the two sides of your food should be cooked equally. Each side is grooved and has a non-stick coating, meaning that if you are trying to cut down on fat in your diet, you will be able to. It is a healthy way to cook and is just as delicious. In addition, the bottom grill is angled so that fat can run down it into the drip tray.

How to Cook a Steak on a George Foreman Grill

It’s not difficult to cook a steak on a George Foreman grill, but perhaps you’re a little apprehensive if you are used to cooking on a charcoal or gas grill outdoors. However, cooking on an electric grill has advantages. You can cook all year round indoors and don’t have to worry about the rain or cold. In addition, it’s much easier to clean than a charcoal grill.

So, how do you go about getting the perfect steak? The first thing to do is to season your steak or make a marinade for it. The simplest marinade is a mixture of olive oil, vinegar, pepper, and salt. You can also buy ready-made marinades for your steak. You can just leave your steak to marinate for half an hour, but if you have the time, marinate it for a few hours. You will get a delicious and full taste.

You then need to preheat the grill for at least 5 minutes on a high heat and with the lid closed. If you have thin steaks you can cook them for just 2 – 3 minutes for a medium-rare steak. If your steak is thicker aim for 4 – 7 minutes for a medium-rare steak and 6 – 9 minutes for a medium to well-done steak. If you want a well-done steak, it should be cooked for 10 minutes. The perfect steak measures around ¾” and you should get the best results grilling one of this size. If your steak is thick, you can cut it thinner with a steak knife. Additionally, you can beat your meat down to the right size with a meat tenderizer. A meat tenderizer looks like a hammer. One side is flat and the other has small teeth. It helps you to get a tender steak every time. A ¾” sirloin steak is ready to eat after just 6 minutes. When you have cooked your steak, leave it to rest for 3 – 5 minutes before serving. Remember that your steak will continue cooking while resting, so it is a good idea to take it off the grill just a little before the cooking time is over. Your steak needs to rest so that the juices have time to redistribute. If you don’t let it rest, the juices will flow away, and you will be left with overdone and dry meat.

Steak should be cooked at 125F for medium-rare and 155F for medium well-done. It’s a good idea to get a meat thermometer so you can check the temperature of your steak. If you want cross grill sears turn the steak a quarter turn halfway through grilling. It will look just like a steak cooked on your outdoor grill.

Although the grill is non-stick, you can add a little oil cooking spray if you wish. It gets rid of the stickiness you might get with a marinade. Olive oil is an excellent choice as it adds a nice flavor to your steak especially if you choose one that has been flavored.

Don’t use any metal utensils when you are cooking your steak as they can scratch the non-stick surface. In addition, keep an eye on the drip tray to make sure that it doesn’t overflow. You don’t want a mess on your counter.

The George Foreman grill is easy to clean. First, take the drip tray out and empty it before washing with warm soapy water and rinsing, If you have an older grill, the plates won’t be removable so as soon as you’ve taken off your steaks, wipe the plates down with wet paper towels. When the grill has cooled down, wipe the plates with a soft sponge and warm soapy water and then wipe down with a separate sponge and plain water. The grills with removable plates are even easier to clean. After you have taken them out, put them in the sink, and cover them with warm soapy water. Leave to soak and then scrub them with a soft sponge. Rinse and allow to dry before putting them back in the grill. The removable plates can be made either of ceramic or a non-stick coating. Either of these materials are dishwasher safe.
