Grumpy grew up eating this Boiled Ham Dinner recipe. My Mom didn’t cook pork so, I had never had ham boiled dinner, and I never knew that it was even a thing. However, I, on the other hand, grew up with Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner, also called a New England Boiled Dinner.

My mom would make her boiled dinner and then, with the leftovers, she would make Corned Beef and Hash. I suppose you could do the same thing with ham also and it would be just as tasty.
My first Boiled Ham Dinner in the Instant Pot
I kind of did this nilly willy because I honestly had no idea how to make this boiled ham dinner. It’s kind of funny how when you may know totally how to do one thing, something that is fairly similar all of a sudden becomes a puzzle.
When I asked my mother in law how she made this one-pot meal, she told me she just put everything in the pot and boiled.
Since I’m all about wanting to use my Instant Pot lately, I decided to make this boiled ham dinner using this method for a total of two firsts.
What you need to make this recipe
Ham: I saved the ham bone from our ham dinner and left a good portion of meat on the bone. I also still had some leftover ham that I had cut off the bone that I added to the pot later.
Ham broth: When I cooked the ham, I also cooked it in the instant pot and kept the broth that was left in the pot and put it in the fridge to use specifically for this meal. If you don’t have ham broth, cover the ham bone with just water.
Potatoes: Yukon gold potatoes are our favorite and what I used. A white potato will work also.
Carrots: I like to buy a thicker carrot to use in this recipe. I buy the whole carrot, not the precut bagged carrots.
Onions: A yellow or white onion works best.
Cabbage: Choose a large head of cabbage.

How I made this recipe
First I added the ham bone to the Instant Pot and covered it with water along with the leftover broth from when I cooked the ham. I set the setting to manual for 30 minutes.
When it was done, I did a quick release and removed the ham bone from the pot and let it cool while the 2nd step was in process and removed any meat left on the bone to add to the boiled ham dinner
I added the veggies to the pot (except for the cabbage) and set the timer. While the veggies were cooking, I cleaned any meat on the bone off and set it aside, discarding the bone.
Next, I added the potatoes, carrots, and onion, and cabbage and cooked on the manual setting for 7 minutes, with a quick release.
Make this recipe on the stovetop
This recipe is easily converted to a stovetop method. Place the ham bone in a large stockpot or dutch oven and add water (and broth if using) to just cover the bone. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat and simmer for about 1 hour.
After the simmering time is complete, remove the ham bone from the stockpot and set aside to cool. Add the leftover ham pieces, potatoes, onion, carrots, cabbage, and bay leaf to the pot.
Bring the ham dinner to a boil, and cook for 15 minutes, or until the carrots and potatoes are tender.
While the vegetables and ham boil, remove the meat on the ham bone and discard the bone. Add the ham to the pot and simmer another 2 minutes, until the ham is warmed through.
