How to Cook Baked Potatoes on the Grill:
Cooking Baked Potatoes on the grill is very easy. These instructions and tips will help you get the best bake potatoes.
Make sure you start with evenly sized bake potatoes so that they are all cooked around the same time. Starting with a preheated grill is also very important.
Following these easy step-by-step instructions results in the best, fluffy bake potato.
Ingredients:
- Medium Russet Potatoes, cleaned and dried
- Avocado Oil – You can also use olive oil
- Sea Salt
Supplies:
- Aluminum Foil
How to Grill Bake Potatoes:
- Prepare Grill – Preheat the grill to 400 degrees F.
- Poke holes in potato – Poke the potato several times with a fork so it pierces the potato. Place the oil in a shallow bowl and place the sea salt in a separate shallow bowl.
- Coat the Potatoes – Then place the potatoes in the bowl with the oil and turn it to ensure that all sides of the potatoes are covered in the oil. Then move the oiled potatoes to the bowl with the salt and turn to coat the outside of the potato with the salt.
- Microwave Potatoes – Then place all the potatoes in a microwave safe dish and microwave the potatoes on high for 5 minutes.
- Wrap in Aluminum Foil – After this cook time, wrap each of the potatoes in a piece of aluminum foil. I prefer heavy duty foil to help prevent tears or leaks.
- Grill Potatoes – Putting the potatoes directly on the grill grates and keep the lid shut, keeps the heat in. Allow the potatoes to cook on the grill for 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes until the potatoes are fork tender and the skin is crispy.
- Rotate Potatoes – Rotate the potatoes every 15-20 minutes to avoid grill hot spots and make sure to keep the lid closed for the entire cooking time. The cooking time will vary based on the size of the potatoes and the internal temperature.
- Cool and Serve – Allow the cook potatoes to cool slight before serving. Cut potatoes, season with salt and pepper and top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
How long to Grill Bake Potatoes:
How long to grill potatoes will depend on your grill. When we decide to grill potatoes, I get them prepared first and put them on the grill. They take about an hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes before they are done.
Set a time and check them by easily piercing with a fork after they been on the grill at about 45 minutes. I start cooking the meat and anything else at this time so everything is done at the same time.
Preheat the Grill:
Preheating the grill is a very important step when grilling potatoes. Start by preheating the grill with the lid close. This ensure all the heat stays inside the grill.
Once it reaches a temperature of 400 degrees, place the potatoes on the grill.
Why are Baked Potatoes on the Grill are so good?
- The potatoes get soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. This adds so much flavor and texture to the potatoes.
- The easiest side you will make on the grill.
- They cook directly on the grill. I can put them on the grill and set enjoy watching my kids swim.
Grilling Bake Potatoes Tips:
- Dry Potatoes – Make sure that the potatoes are dry before grilling to prevent any burning on the outside of the potato skin.
- Leftovers – Store any leftover potatoes in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5-7 days.
- Poke with a fork – Make sure to poke the potatoes with the fork. This prevents the potatoes from exploding.
- Wrap in foil – Wrap the potatoes in foil to prevent the outsides from burning.
- Sweet Potatoes – You can also Grill Sweet Potatoes. Sweet Potatoes don’t take as long to cook, so check them about 30 minutes in.
- Equal Size Potatoes – Be sure to buy equal size of bake potatoes. I usually buy the actual bake potatoes instead of the potatoes in the bag. I make sure they are all the same size.
