There’s nothing awful like a cup of coffee spilling on your bed. This may not only ruin your morning but may also void your mattress’s warranty. So, do you want to know how to get coffee stains out of your mattress and beddings? If yes, go through the tips highlighted in this article.
For newbies, use a towel to soak in the coffee stain on your mattress. Next, take a dry cloth and dampen it with warm water to blot the stain. Repeat the process using another fresh cloth with vinegar and liquid detergent. After 5 minutes, dab a fresh wet cloth to rinse the detergent. Lastly, dry the mattress with a clean towel, a fan, or a blow dryer.

How to Clean Fresh Coffee Stains Out of Your Mattress
Spills are inevitable if you are the breakfast-in-bed person who enjoys a cold coffee shake or a hot cup of coffee. Even though most people love coffee, nobody loves spilled coffee stains on a mattress or beddings.
However, cleaning coffee stains on a mattress might be more daunting than cleaning the beddings. Why? This is because bed covers and sheets can be cleaned using a washing machine, unlike a mattress. In case of a coffee spill on your mattress, don’t panic; act fast, and follow the tips highlighted below.
There are 2 different ways to go about it. They include using a liquid detergent or using a stain remover spray as discussed below:
Method 1: Using a Liquid Detergent

I recommend this method if the coffee stain contains sugar. This is one of the cheapest and most effective ways of cleaning fresh coffee stains from your mattress. Ensure you clean the mattress immediately after a coffee spill.
What You Need:
- Brush
- Cold water
- 10 ounces of water
- 1-ounce distilled white vinegar
- 1-ounce liquid detergent
Steps to Follow:
Use distilled white vinegar, water, and liquid detergent to prepare a dilute solution in exact proportions. Identify the coffee stain on the mattress and apply this cleaning solution.
Use a brush to rub on the stains gently. Doing this enables the cleaning solution to penetrate throughout the blot. Leave the cleaning solution for about 10 to 15 minutes on the stain.
Use a clean wet sponge to blot the coffee mark. Repeat this step till the stain disappears completely. For more stubborn stains, increase the concentration of the cleaning solution.
Lastly, allow the mattress to dry using a blow dryer or a fan to prevent mold and fungus.
More on mixing laundry detergent and vinegar here.
Method 2: Using Stain Remover Spray

If you find using liquid detergent to clean coffee stains from your mattress tedious, try using a stain remover spray. Even though it may be costly, it’s specially made to remove coffee stains easily and effectively.
What You Need:
- Water
- Fan
- Stain remover spray (Amazon paid link)
- Absorbent paper towels
- Clean cloth, sponge, or rag
Steps to Follow:
Grab some absorbent paper towels immediately after coffee spills on your mattress. To soak up the moisture, press them onto the coffee stains. Ensure that you replace the used paper towels with fresh ones depending on the intensity of the coffee spill.
Apply the stain remover spray onto the tarnished area. Ensure the coffee stain is covered and let the spray work for 15 minutes.
Scrub the blemished area using a wet sponge or a clean cloth. Repeat this step to ensure all the coffee stains come out.
If the stain is persistent, apply more stain remover and repeat the process. After the stain is out completely, ensure there’s no moisture left on the mattress since dampness may lead to mold and fungus growth. You can do so using a fan or a blow dryer.
Keep in mind that you should avoid using bleach or hydrogen peroxide for foam mattresses. This is because they might ruin the mattress for good.

How to Clean Dry Coffee Stains Out of Your Mattress

If you’re in a hurry and you happen to spill coffee on your mattress, don’t worry. Follow the steps below to learn how to clean dry coffee stains from your mattress.
What You Need:
- Liquid detergent
- Clean cloth
- Distilled white vinegar
- Dish soap
- Bowl and a fan
- Water
Step 1: Use Water, Dish Soap, and Vinegar to Prepare a Cleaning Solution
This step involves combining 1 tablespoon of dish soap, ¼ cup of white distilled vinegar, and ¾ cup of warm water in a bowl. I prefer using 45% Calyptus Pure Super Concentrated Vinegar because it’s highly concentrated and powerful. I recommend Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid Dish Soap for the dish soap since it’s concentrated with a cutting agent.
Step 2: Dampen a Clean Cloth to Blot the Coffee Stain
Dampen a clean cloth using the prepared cleaning solution to blot the dry coffee stain on your mattress. To prevent further spreading of the stain, start blotting at the edge and move gradually towards the center of the stain. Gentle blotting ensures the stain doesn’t get deeper into your mattress.
Step 3: Mix Laundry Detergent with Warm Water and Apply the Solution to the Stain
Of course, ready-to-drink coffee contains some sugar and creamer. If the spilled coffee contains these components and has dried up, you need a liquid detergent and water solution. This is because sugar and creamer increase the tenacity of a coffee stain.
Use a clean cloth to dab the solution onto the stain and allow it to stay for about 5 minutes. Finally, dab the area with a fresh, damp clean cloth. This helps remove the detergent entirely from the affected area together with the coffee stain.
Step 4: Dry the Mattress
Allow the mattress to dry completely once the stain is gone before putting sheets on it. Open a window to maintain airflow around your mattress or use a fan.
Step 5: Use Baking Soda to Deodorize the Mattress
If you still have a coffee smell on your mattress after drying, you can use baking soda to deodorize it. You can achieve this by sprinkling baking soda over the tarnished area and allowing it to sit for about an hour. After the time elapses, vacuum the baking soda from the mattress, and you’re done.

How to Remove Coffee Stains From Your Bedding

Follow these simple steps if you accidentally spilled coffee and stained your soft and comfortable beddings.
What You Need:
- Fabric conditioner
- Detergent powder
- Warm water and sponge
- Dishwashing liquid
- Vinegar/baking soda
- Cotton cloth and paper towels
Step 1: Blot the Coffee Stain
Use paper towels to soak the coffee stains from your blankets and sheets. Alternatively, use a dry cotton cloth but avoid scrubbing the stain since it will only spread further.
Step 2: Use Detergent Powder with Warm Water
Use warm water and detergent powder to make a cleaning solution. Apply it to the stained area and sprinkle some baking soda over it. Give it about 20 to 25 minutes to settle, and then use a paper towel to blot it away. If the coffee stains don’t come out completely, proceed to step 3.
Step 3: Prepare a Stain-treating Solution
If the coffee stain persists, prepare a stronger stain-treating solution. This is how to go about it. Measure1 cup of warm water and add 1 tbsp. of white vinegar along with 1 tsp. of dishwashing liquid and mix them properly. Apply this solution to the stained area of the beddings and allow it to rest for about 15 minutes.
Step 4: Use a Wet Clean Sponge to Wipe Off the Stain
In this step, dampen a sponge with warm water and use it to wipe off the blemished area of your beddings. The coffee stains should be able to disappear completely. However, you’ll have to repeat the process if they don’t.
Step 5: Let the Beddings Dry
After completing the above steps, leave the stained area of the blanket/sheet to air-dry. Take note that there’s no need to hang the beddings in the sun. It’s advisable not to put them in a washing machine until you’ve treated the stain. This helps prevent the coffee stain from spreading all over the beddings.
Step 5: Wash the Beddings
Last, it’s important to read the care label on the blanket and follow the wash instructions. I’d suggest using an effective detergent. But you can use a detergent powder such as Surf Excel Easy Wash if you prefer to hand wash your blanket.
This can work hand in hand with a fabric conditioner such as Comfort Core which is readily available on the market. Apart from making the fabric soft and smooth, it also helps keep the fibers intact. Don’t forget that it also adds a mild fragrance to the fabric.

How to Prevent Mattress Stains
Even though you can avoid coffee stains on your mattress, it’s not easy to prevent yellow sweat stains. After using a mattress for 5 to 6 years, these stains are usually noticeable. Check out the tips below to ensure your mattress is free from such stains. They include:
Mattress Protector
To prevent any liquid from seeping through, most mattress protectors are waterproof. They not only prevent your mattress from coffee stains, but they also prevent yellow sweat stains on your mattress. The good thing about them is they can easily be removed and machine-washed after every 2 weeks on the gentle cycle.

Rotate Your Mattress
You can prevent sweat and body oil from staining your mattress by rotating your mattress once every 3 to 4 months. This ensures you sleep on different parts of the mattress to reduce stain build-up.
Mattress Pads
These are small removable covers that you can use to wrap around the sides of your mattress. Apart from adding an additional layer for comfort, their main function is to protect your mattress from stains.
Buy mattress pads on Amazon (again, paid link)
Mattress Toppers
Mattress toppers are thicker compared to mattress pads and protectors. They are plusher and can change the comfort level and overall feel of a mattress.
This is because they are made of latex or memory foam. These materials help extend the life of your mattress but note that they offer less protection against coffee stains.
You can also buy these on Amazon (take a guess if this link is paid or not)
Fix a Well-Fitting Sheet
This is another way of preventing your mattress from getting stains. Ensure that the sheet covers your mattress completely to prevent any dirt from reaching it. Remember that you need to change your sheets regularly, like every 2 to 3 days.
More on making your sheet sit perfectly on your mattress here.
Use Baking Soda
Do you have baking soda in your kitchen that you don’t know where else to use it? Well, baking soda works like magic where mattress cleaning is a concern. So, how does it work?
Spill some baking soda on the mattress and spread it evenly with your hands. You can also use a flour sifter to spread the baking soda and leave it for at least 30 minutes. Ensure you place the mattress in a far-to-reach place if you have kids in the house.
Baking soda helps kill dust mites that may be tucked in your mattress. It also helps remove any foul smell from the mattress by sucking all the moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Steam Clean My Mattress?
Answer: Yes, you can. But you should note that the vapor steam from steam cleaners comes with a risk even if it removes dust and allergen build-up from your mattress. This is because moisture may set within the thick foam and may not be detectable from the surface. As a result, this may end up destroying the mattress.
How Can I Deep Clean My Mattress?
Answer: Foremost, you must remove all the beddings and vacuum the mattress surface. Sprinkle baking soda all over the mattress and leave it for about 10 to 24 hours. After that, re-vacuum it to remove all the baking soda, and you’re done. Ensure you deep clean your mattress at least twice a year.
Bottom Line
The best way to get coffee stains out of mattresses/beddings is to clean them as soon as possible. Also, try using mattress protectors or pads to prevent the stains from setting into the mattress fabric. Use this handy guide to clean your mattress if the coffee stains have dried up.
