We have been living in Saskatchewan for over three years now, that’s three years without the amazing food in Nova Scotia. Seafood, because eating it from a box just isn’t the same thing as fresh from the ocean. This donair sauce was a taste of home for many years and is so easy to make for our family pizza nights.

We haven’t found donair sauce here, not in a restaurant nor in-store. Garlic fingers either for that matter. Or donairs. I really need some good Nova Scotia food, like Pizza Delight.
Because we get cravings for that food, my husband has stepped up and perfected his own recipes. This is one of them. This recipe is for donair sauce without evaporated milk.
He started making it to go along with the pizza and garlic fingers that he makes from scratch because store-bought just doesn’t do this justice.
What you need:
- 1 can sweeten condensed milk
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/3 cup vinegar
How to make this easy Donair Sauce:
- Whisk it together, adding the vinegar in slowly.
- Refrigerate. It will thicken up, this batch thickened up so that we could turn our container upside down without it moving.
We only make our sauce using brand name sweetened condensed milk, like Eagle brand. Some of the no-name versions can really change the final outcome of your sauce – too watery, and a complete change of taste.
How Long Does Homemade Donair Sauce Last:
It will last a couple of weeks in the fridge in a closed container just as a jar or in a storage container, like Rubbermaid which is what we use most of time.
How to Thicken Donair Sauce
If you often find that your sauce is too runny you may have added too much vinegar. Just like baked goods, temperature and climate can affect how much of certain ingredients.
You may find you don’t need the full 1/3 cup of vinegar. Add it in slowly and test as you go along. It’s easier to add more than to take it away later on.

Out of condensed milk? Have evaporated milk though? I have you covered with this donair sauce over here. It is a sweeter sauce too which might be what you like.
Store Bought VS Homemade
I’m not saying that this recipe is better than Pizza Delight donair sauce, I’m saying it is better than the condiment bottles of it you can find in store. And this, this recipe, it is damn good. Right up there with Pizza Delight in my opinion.
We prefer to have homemade everything here in our house than to buy it at a store, even if it means more work for us.
When you want something bad enough you find a way to get it, and that’s how this recipe came along, through trial and error.
