Red Velvet Brownies Recipe:
Red velvet is one of my favorite desserts. I love this easy Red Velvet Cake recipe and Red Velvet Trifle Cups. Sometimes, you just get a craving for red velvet and need it to be quick and easy.
This recipe for Red Velvet Brownies is just that! Since it uses a cake mix, it comes together in minutes. In fact, there are only a few ingredients so you know it really is quick and easy.
What is Red Velvet?
Red Velvet is a vanilla cake that with cocoa powder and red food coloring that is mixed in. Combined it makes a beautiful red color.
What does Red Velvet Brownies Taste Like?
Red Velvet Brownies has a fudgy chewy texture but not cakey. The taste is between a chocolate and vanilla flavored brownie.
Is Red Velvet just Chocolate?
Because Red Velvet has a chocolate flavor and one of the ingredients is cocoa powder. It is not just a chocolate cake recipe. It has less cocoa powder than a traditional chocolate cake recipe.
Red Velvet Brownies Ingredients:
- Red Velvet Cake Mix
- Egg
- Butter
- Vanilla Extract
- White Chocolate Chips
Ingredient Substitution Ideas:
- For the Cake Mix – You can use any flavor of cake mix that you prefer. We love Red Velvet so it’s our favorite to use in this easy cake mix brownie recipe.
- For the Butter – You can use the same amount in vegetable oil if you prefer.
- For the White Chocolate Chips – Milk Chocolate or Semi-sweet chocolate chips would be delicious in these brownies as well.
How to Make Brownies out of cake mix:
- First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Next, spray an 8X8 Baking pan with non-stick spray.
- Combine all the ingredients except for the white chocolate chips in a mixing bowl. Stir together by hand.
- The batter will be thick but this is normal. Add the water if you are unable to get the cake mix to combine fully with the melted butter and egg.
- Fold in the white chocolate chips. Then pour the red velvet brownie batter into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes. Edges will be firm.
- Let the brownies cool completely and then slice and enjoy.
How do you know when the brownies are done?
Watch the brownies closely toward the end of the cook time. The edges will be set and baked through.
The center of the brownies will be mostly set but will be still slightly wobbly. The brownies will continue to cook some while they cool so be sure not to over bake.
If you want fudgy brownies, do not wait for a toothpick inserted in the middle to come out clean. This will make more of cake like brownies.
Variation Ideas:
- You can top these brownies with powdered sugar or cream cheese frosting to add even more sweetness to this recipe. Mix the cream cheese frosting together in a small bowl and this spread it on top of the brownies once they have cooled.
- You can leave out the white chocolate chips or just milk chocolate instead.
- If you prefer cake like brownies, add 1 more egg to this recipe. Ensure that you stir the eggs in one at a time.
What is the difference between a Cake Mix and brownie mix?
A cake mix and a brownie mix are essentially the same things. What you combine with the mix is what makes the mix turn into brownies or a cake.
For this recipe, do not follow the instructions on the back of the red velvet cake mix. These instructions are to make a cake and we’re making brownies instead.
Make sure you follow the instructions in our recipe below to make easy Red velvet brownies.
How to Cut Brownies:
The best way to cut brownies is allow them to cool completely. Then when you ready to cut, use a clean knife. It is recommend to use a plastic knife or a regular knife covered in cooking spray.
How to Serve:
We love to serve these brownies warm and with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. But they are just as delicious by themselves.
How to Store:
Store in an air tight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. They generally only last 1 to 2 days in my house.
How to Freeze:
Make sure that the brownies have cooled completely at room temperature. Cut the brownies into individual pieces. Wrap each piece with plastic wrap.
Then place the individual pieces in a freezer bag and freezer for up to 3 months.
How to Thaw and Reheat
To thaw the brownies out, place them on a plate at room temperature and wait for them to thaw out.
This is my favorite way to freeze brownies, so you can easily defrost out the amount that you want to enjoy that evening.
Red Velvet Cake Mix Brownies Tips:
- Use Parchment Paper – I also like to use parchment paper when I bake. It helps make clean up easy.
- Use a wire Rack – If you don’t have a wire rack, they are so handy to help cool the brownies completely if you plan to take them out and then cut them.
- Be careful not to over mix the brownie batter or over bake them.
- Make a double batch and package the leftovers in small zip lock bags to put into your kid’s lunches for the week or to have on hand for a quick sweet treat.
What makes Brownies Fudgy versus Cakey?
Brownies are generally more fudgy than a cake as it has a high fat to flour ratio than a cake does.
So combining the butter with the cake mix in this recipe will ensure that your red velvet brownies are fudgy and not cakey.
