Some artists record a dozen songs and release an album with all of them, ensuring each one is perfect. Most well-known musicians will record two or three times as many tracks as are featured on a new full-length, always keeping lesser tunes in the vault. Hip-hop powerhouse Juice WRLD puts them all to shame, as he has hundreds of pieces of music that may never see the light of day…and that’s on top of the massive number of cuts he does share.

The hip-hop talent, who reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year with his sophomore full-length Death Race for Love, just recently pushed his new single “Bandit” with YoungBoy Never Broke Again into the Hot 100’s top 10 and who has claimed he has another new full-length coming by the end of 2019, took time out of an insanely hectic schedule to speak with me about giving back to his hometown, his incredible output and what’s next for the genre he’s helped popularize all around the world.

Hugh McIntyre: Do you want to tell me a bit about it the event that happened just a few days ago with McDonald’s?

Juice WRLD: Yeah. I partnered with McDonald’s to do a free show and donated some money for this mentor program that I was in as a child. It was a really good turnout. A lot of people showed up. It was a really good environment, really good energy. It is always going to be a good vibe if giving back is involved. So it was just all-in-all a good experience and, obviously, was a good thing.

McIntyre: So you were actually involved with the nonprofit 100 Black Men of Chicago when you were younger?

Juice WRLD: Exactly, yep.

McIntyre: So how did it feel being able to give back in this way?

Juice WRLD: It feels great, honestly. It most definitely did. I’m a humble person, but it humbled me even more and just to see the smiles on all of those kids’ faces. And, even, some old mentors, to see the smile on some of their faces. To see that they’re proud of me and they see that I used the tools that they gave me to get to where I’m at. And to see me as the finished product, even though I’m not done growing, but to see me further on than I was when I was in there, you know?

McIntyre: Mm-hmm.

Juice WRLD: It was great. It was beautiful, actually.

McIntyre: That week was really big week for you. You had this event and your new single “Bandit” just broke into the top 10 on the Hot 100. How did that feel?

Juice WRLD: It’s funny because that happened pretty fast. To see my song is listed on top 10 or whatever. Immediately the people around me are like, “Oh, did you know your song was top 10? Did you know this was number one?” I really don’t even pay attention to it. I mean, it’s a blessing, don’t get me wrong. I’m thankful and I’m happy that my song is ranked that high, but I don’t know. It’s just that I don’t even really pay attention to stuff like that.

McIntyre: But it must feel great to know that so many people are listening, especially for a song that’s essentially brand new.

Juice WRLD: Yeah, for sure. I mean, I know my fan base pretty well and I’m blessed to have the fan base that I have because they show a lot of love. They are hardcore fans.

McIntyre: Yeah.

Juice WRLD: This is what they do.

McIntyre: Is “Bandit” going to be featured on the album you’ve mentioned that’s coming in December?

Juice WRLD: I don’t know. No.

McIntyre: No?

Juice WRLD: No. I mean, I want to start fresh. And I have so much music that I don’t need to bring back something old. I probably have over a thousand songs.

McIntyre: Oh my God.

Juice WRLD: Yeah. I’m not going to bring back anything old. It’s going to be all new stuff.

McIntyre: I mean, you’ve got a million things going on. How are you able to write and record that much music?

Juice WRLD: It’s my release. And I don’t write anything. I freestyle everything. So, it’s just my release. I have not written a song in a very long time. I just go off the top of my head, pretty much.

McIntyre: Wow.

Juice WRLD: That’s my release. And the songs just pile up. I’m recording every day, making like five to 10 songs a day, mostly.

McIntyre: Oh my God. Wow, that’s incredible. Your style of hip hop, you mix in elements of rock and alternative and emo bands that I grew up with, and a lot of people are excited to see you change the genre in a new and fresh way. What do you think is next for hip hop?

Juice WRLD: Honestly, it’s to a point now where, I mean, do you know that phase where everybody was saying that they were like a rock star?

McIntyre: Sure.

Juice WRLD: I think that came from SoundCloud music. Like Peep and Tracy and like people like Horsehead. All the people that were doing the rock rap on SoundCloud. I feel like that came from that. But next? I don’t know. I feel it’s in the air, bro. It could go anywhere. Who knows? Somebody could make a jazz fusion rap song, and the next thing you know, everybody’s making jazz fusion rap. Who knows where it’s going to go.

McIntyre: I would love it.

Juice WRLD: That’s the exciting part about it, though.

McIntyre: I love it. I love it. Well, I mean, I’m excited to hear the album. I loved Death Race For Love, so I’m excited to hear the next one.

Juice WRLD: Man, I’m excited to release and to put a product out there for people to enjoy. I’m going to be doing a lot more than just music, though. So people should expect video art, short films, you know. There’s a lot to come.
