Dairy is a big part of my daily diet and I probably consume it at least twice a day, whether it’s from milk, cheese or yoghurt. It’s a great source of protein and full-fat varieties tend to be my preferred choice as they’re less processed. In terms of milk, I always buy almond milk because it has a lovely creaminess and taste. Full-fat Greek yoghurt is my go-to yogurt of choice because I prefer that rich and almost indulgent texture and cheese mainly revolves around feta and halloumi cheese at the moment.
St Helen’s Farm are a goat dairy based in Yorkshire and produces a range of goats’ milk products that are packed fresh every day and are readily available at supermarkets across the country. Goat’s milk isn’t a regular on a British shopping list when buying milk, cheese etc. as cow dairy products are more popular. However, goats’ milk is so pure and has smaller fat particles so many people have found it better for their digestion.
I’ve been challenged by St Helen’s Farm to swap all of my cow dairy produce to their goats’ based products and share my experiences to highlight the versatility and quality of goats’ produce. I was sent a wonderful hamper full of St Helen’s Dairy goat’s products, which include
- Whole, semi-skimmed and skimmed cartons of fresh goats’ milk
- Natural and fat-free yogurt
- Delicious flavoured yogurt
- Smooth and soft goats’ butter
- Mild goats’ cheese
- Mature goats’ cheese
I also created two recipes using some of the products in the hamper, my Pear & Ginger Breakfast Parfait and Apple & Cinnamon Pie Smoothie.
Other than goat’s cheese, I’d never tried any other goats’ produce before, so I was eager to get stuck in. The first thing on my list to try was the natural yogurt, a breakfast staple of mine in the summer, which I tend to serve with my Peanut Butter Granola and fresh berries. Texture wise, it’s more like a runny natural yogurt and has a tang to it. Even though it’s not as rich in texture as Greek yoghurt I still enjoyed it and will perhaps make for a nice lighter option. The individual pots of yogurt make a lovely afternoon or evening snack, the simpler honey flavoured ones have been my personal favourite of mine.
We all tried all three variations of the goat’s milk and again no one battered an eyelid over the taste and it’s just as creamy as regular cow’s milk. It’s definitely lighter than cow’s milk and felt kinder to my digestion. Nutritionally, goat’s milk is very similar to cow’s milk so your body won’t miss the vital vitamins and minerals if you were to swap. I used the milk in my baking, tea, porridge, and cooking making it just as versatile as cow’s milk.
Overall, we’ve all been really impressed with not only the quality of St Helen’s Farm products but goat’s dairy in general as it’s something that we’ve never bought before. I would happily buy these products for my family again as we really enjoyed them and except for the yogurt, we didn’t notice any difference in the taste and they slotted into our daily lives very easily.
