Natchez, Mississippi surprised us as a destination full of history, unusual sightseeing, and great food. I was just a little upset that we didn’t make the trip to Natchez sooner. After all, Mississippi is our home state. Fried chicken, tamales and barbecue are just a few of the southern favorites you’ll want to try in Natchez.

Mammy’s Cupboard
Natchez, MS | mammyscupboard.comAddress: 555 US-61
A restaurant housed in a building that looks like an Aunt Jemima stereotype is not the most politically correct restaurant we’ve ever seen. Like with most roadside attractions, we pulled over because of sheer curiosity.

Inside, in the skirt, you’ll find a menu of traditional southern homecooking like chicken pot pie and red beans and rice. Mammy’s is a favorite with tourists and locals alike.
We found everyone inside to be kind and hospitable. The locals know the daily specials by heart. If you choose to eat here, leave room for pie!

The Donut Shop
Natchez, MS | The Donut Shop Facebook PageAddress: 501 John R Junkin Drive
Since I can’t have homemade pies for breakfast, I satisfied my sweet tooth with doughnuts. You will smell the heavenly sweetness wafting from The Donut Shop as soon as you step out of your car.
Somehow, I always end up looking for the best doughnuts in every location we visit. I admit that I may have a doughnut addiction. Hot tamales are also available.
King’s Tavern

We recommend visiting King’s Tavern for many reasons. It’s the oldest building in Natchez, possibly haunted, and has terrific food.
The tavern is known for delicious flatbreads and craft cocktails. We say at LEAST stop in for a drink because you can get drinks made from Charboneau Rum, the award-winning rum distilled right there on property. Mixology classes and distillery tours are also available.

Old Country Store
Lorman, MS | Old Country Store Facebook PageAddress: 18801 US-61
Okay, technically this one is not IN Natchez. The Old Country Store is located about 35 miles away in Lorman, Mississippi. Housed in, you guessed it, an old country store, you’ll find a buffet of Southern home-cooking. The fried chicken is what put this place on the map.
As equally important as eating the chicken is talking with the owner, Mr. D, himself. He is so precious and quite the character. If you’re lucky, he’ll put on a show for you!
